The Centre’s community life includes a range of activities that provide opportunities for recreation, encounters, exchanges and sharing that meet the needs and interests of the community’s members.

Children

You want your children to connect with the indigenous world?

The Centre offers cultural, social, sports, artistic and technological activities for children aged 6 to 12. The activity calendar varies according to the season.

The Centre offers an activity program for teens aged 12 to 17 in a safe and non-judgmental environment. These activities allow young people to create bonds and promote pride in their identity, leadership and civic involvement.

The Friendship Centre’s teenage room is open every lunchtime according to the school calendar and allows young people to get together in a safe space.

MOBILE CARAVANE
You are looking for new entertaining activities ?
You want to exchange with intervention workers who welcome you without judging you ?

The mobile caravan goes out to meet young people in their living environments. It is a place where young people can come together to have fun, refresh their minds and find someone to listen to them.

Examples of activities: outdoor BBQ, video game party, outdoor movies, sports activities, etc.

LEADERSHIP CAMP
You thrive on challenges ?
You have plenty of ideas ?
You are proud of your indigenous culture ?

Leadership camps provide a platform for Indigenous youth to use their talents and develop their leadership skills.

The leadership camps, organised in partnership, usually take place once a year and offer a full activity week. They are held in Val-d’Or and sometimes outside the region.

Examples of activities: sports, theatre, team games, cultural activities, outdoor activities, etc.

You want to take a break from home ?
You want to meet other indigenous elders ?

The Centre offers elders activities that allow them to get together and talk in a calm and welcoming environment. In addition to breaking isolation and contributing to the development of a mutual support network, the group allows elders to share their knowledge.

Examples of activities: sewing workshops, crafts, cultural activities, recreational outings, etc.

The Centre provides community opportunities for encounters, exchanges and participation in activities or projects for community members. These initiatives allow Indigenous people to connect and express their sense of belonging to the community.

COMMUNITY KITCHEN
You would like to cook meals with a group and at low cost?

Once a month, the Centre offers a collective cooking activity that allows community members to get together and pool their time and culinary talents to prepare healthy and appetizing dishes that they can then take home.

A contribution of $10 is requested.

Each year, the Centre organises a group to participate in “Val-d’Or s’embellit”, a major spring cleaning of the city’s parks and green spaces. This community activity brings together families who embellish the common spaces outside the Centre. A festive and friendly annual event with games, food and prizes.

ROCK YOUR MOCS
You are proud of your identity ?
You want to join a virtual solidarity movement ?

In mid-November, the Centre participates in the Rock Your Mocs movement by inviting people to proudly wear their moccasins, take a photo, create a video or story, add the hashtag (#ROCKYOURMOCS) and upload it on social media.

In a nutshell:

  • Founded in 2011, Rock Your Mocs has grown into a virtual global Indigenous movement held in mid-November each year
  • Rock Your Mocs began during November National Native American Heritage Month in the United States
