Birth and Early Childhood

You are pregnant and want to prepare for the birth of your child?
Are you worried about the development of your pre-school child?
You want to share your experience with other parents?

The Birth and Early Childhood program includes perinatal services, a parent-baby room (0-2 years), awakening and stimulation activities (2-5 years) and support for parents of children aged 0-5 years.

Our Services

The Awejish group provides a space for parents, their babies and their children under the age of two to share experiences. It also provides a community and cultural connection for pregnant women.

Parents will be able to experience different activities and acquire different knowledge:

  • Sharing tips and tricks on pregnancy and birth
  • Traditional teachings on birth
  • Traditional ceremonies (e.g. welcoming the newborn, Walking Out ceremony, etc.)
  • Pre and post natal workshops:
    • Musical awakening activities
    • Workshops on nutrition
    • Fitness activities
    • Activities to stimulate children’s development
  • Group outings (e.g. beach, walk in the forest, etc.)
  • Nursing and medical services

The Mother-Child Clinic is a medical consultation service for pregnant women, new parents and their babies offered by a physician at the Friendship Centre’s Indigenous Health Clinic. This service is available with or without an appointment every Monday afternoon.

The Awakening and Stimulation service aims at early intervention with pre-school children, contributes to the global development of each child and fosters identity building.

The service offers pre-school experiences focusing on six components:

  • Indigenous culture and languages
  • Education and school readiness
  • Health promotion
  • Nutrition
  • Social support
  • Parental involvement
